During World War II, much of Des Moines was used as a military airfield including Mather Field North which saw use from December 1942 until May 1945; Grissom Air Force Base south of town where American bombers were based during 1944–1945; Beechcraft Aircraft Company Airport north of town from June 1943 until November 1945; Osceola County Fairgrounds southeast of town from July 1943 until October 1945; Wright Field northwest of town from February 1944 until May 1945; all these facilities were ultimately closed or converted into civil airports subsequent to the war's end On January 1, 1997 Ames University became a public university following passage by voters in a referendum over two years old that allowed for such action pursuant to provisions of Republic Act No 8027 which granted autonomy to universities within central government service areas subject only to certain regulations set forth therein In early 2019 plans emerged for construction along Interstate 35W adjacent First National Bank Plaza across from Target Mall that would include approximately 4500 development units—the largest mixed-use project ever approved in Polk County
