Des Moines, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa and the county seat of Polk County. It was founded in 1859 by Danish immigrants as a stop on the route between Burlington, Iowa and Council Bluffs, Iowa. The population was 146,822 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Iowa after Sioux City and Des Moines metropolitan areas. The site for Des Moines had been under consideration for many years before its establishment as a town. The firstorganized settlement in what is now Des Moines occurred near what is now West Side Avenue and Fourth Street on November 15, 1858 when 11 men from Denmark purchased land from John Prentice at $1 per acre (2 km²). They named their new community "Deshaung" after Captain Hanson's flagship HMS Constitution which had recently reached dry dock at Liverpool docks following her voyage around Cape Horn. Captain Hanson transported goods to Fort Dodge on his ship during this time and donated land to the town site on which he lived with his family until his death in 1861. In 1859, Jonas Slemons began construction of a sawmill across from present day State Capitol Square where he continued to operate until 1865 when river control improved making sawmills uneconomical to operate; therefore, Slemons sold his interests to George Wickersham who operated it until 1897 when it went out of business due to competition by new machines brought over by railroads. In 1901, Wickersham merged with fellow mill owners James Fenton and Ashton Kline into an incorporated company called Minneapolis & Dubuque Railroad Company which became part of Union Pacific Railroad upon its purchase of UP's assets in 1907. By 1912 Des Moines had become two separate towns - one east of First Street downtown (the original Dutchtown) while the other west along South First Street (Waukee). When Union Pacific merged with Chicago Southern Railway back into UP in 1916 both cities were once again united under one name - Des Moines - but this merger never happened because Chicago Southern would not allow unification without getting consent from all participating railroad companies including UP. During World War I local farmers produced food for soldiers so that they could not go hungry while fighting overseas; however most civilians did not support military service because they knew that war would cause more poverty than wealth creation For this reason later Wars caused desegregation within American society although there have been few protests against white flight overall during this period After World War I there was an influx of Polish Americans who helped build several businesses such as Monsanto Co.; Ames Rubber Products Co.; Archer Daniels Midland Co.; Coca ColaCola Bottling Works etc among others This also attracted Jews who wanted access to good jobs outside traditional Jewish denominations such as grocery stores or insurance companies . Most people living below poverty lines were African Americans who were picked up by families working within traditional black industries like farming or manufacturing
