The first white person to live in Des Moines was purchasing land from the Sioux Nation in 1846. The town was founded on what is today First Street and Harmon Avenue. In 1851, the Iowa General Assembly designated Des Moines as the capital of Iowa. It would remain so for the next fifty years. In 1872, a new city hall was built and named after George Washington Carver, who had donated land to the city. The city experienced rapid growth during the late 1800s and early 1900s thanks to its location near the then-new Central Railway line and other transportation improvements.
