Des Moines, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa, and the seat of Polk County. The population was 21,953 at the 2010 census, making it the third-largest city in Iowa after Cedar Rapids and Des Moines. It is also the county seat for Polk County. The first permanent settlement in what is now Des Moines was made on August 14, 1836 by George Washington Carver and his family as part of a land grant from President James K. Polk to John A. Adams. The town likely derived its name from nearby Davenport (now West Des Moines). In 1841, Lumber City was founded by a group of Minneapolis businessmen on the north side of present-day downtown Des Moines to provide lumber for buildings in that city. The new town grew quickly but soon went out of business due to competition from Cedar Rapids and other cities growing around it. In 1845, Minnesota Senator Isaac Newton Bryan founded what would become known as Western Stream Television Company near downtown Des Moines with help from banker Cyrus McCormick; this helped started an era where businesses were based along riverfronts rather than inside cities.. In 1851, Jesse Hinton established a flour mill on Cottonwood Creek east of downtown Des Moines; this milling industry became one of the most important economic engines in Des Moines during its early years. In 1857, David Holbrook built the first steamboat landing on modern-day Kinnickinnic River just south of downtown Des Moines; this landing helped spark an area's growth as an agricultural center which continues today with several thousand acres (1 km²) devoted to corn farming alone . By 1870, much of central Iowa had been annexed by Chicago; however, many Quaker merchants and farmers remained active in central Iowa until their departure for Illinois or even Texas during World War I . During World War II many industries switched to wartime production such as aviation manufacturing which led to Steelworkers' Union headquarters being located in downtown Des Moines until 1951 when it moved into Eastern Market Building across the street from State Capitol.. After having served as Executive Vice President under Richard Nixon and later Gerald Ford during their terms as president (1974-1977), Nelson Rockefeller began his political career by running for office inDES MOINES back then called "Nelson Prior". He won easily becoming one half of what would be called "The Twin Towers" - two very different branches within American Politics - both later serving terms as Governor Of New York City before dying at age 94 after only eight months term followed by four days illness while he was still inaugurated albeit less popularly then his predecessor who had been impeached

The first permanent settler in what would become Des Moines was James Krieger who arrived on October 27, 1847. He named his land "Iowa City" after his father's hometown of Youngstown, Ohio. Krieger and his family were among the earliest white settlers in what would become Polk County; he founded a log cabin on what is now State Street near where today's Wells Fargo building stands. In 1851, Krieger married Margaret Kinnaird and they began raising crops and cattle on their new farmstead until their death in 1893. Their five children - James (1851-1912), John (1853-1936), Edith (1855-1945), Winnie Mae (1859-1927) and Myrtle Lora Kinnaird (1860-1945) - grew up on the farm before migrating to Chicago for school during World War II and later moving back to Des Moines when they took over management of their parents' farmstead from them late into their lives.
In 1957, after years of planning by Mayor George Norris and others working within local government structures then under way, Des Moines became an incorporated city with boundaries similar to those that exist today. This event not only signaled a new level of municipal self-reliance but also helped establish Des Moines as one of America's most vibrant urban areas. With its growing economy came increased demand for services – including police protection and firefighting – which led to investments in infrastructure such as transportation systems. Ultimately these investments have paid off handsomely for Des Moines over ensuing decades: according to US News & World Report's 2011 list Of The 50 Best Metropolitan Areas To Live In America.,"Des Moines placed #5, ranking behind only Portland, Ore.; San Diego; Nashville; Seattle; Austin; Dallas; Jacksonville Fla.; Denver Colo.; Sacramento Calif.,"according to data compiled by Moody’s Analytics.
