At that time, the city was a center for the firearms industry and there were several gunsmiths who manufactured rifles and shotguns. One of thesegunsmiths, John Bowen, ran a shop on Fourth Street. His shop was known for manufacturing quality pistols and revolvers. In 1904, Bowen started manufacturing ammunition in his shop and soon became known as one of the leading Ammunition manufacturers in the Midwest. In 1934, The Armoury Company opened up its doors in Des Moines and began producing high-quality handguns and rifle ammo under the name “Des Moines Arms”. The company continued to produce firearms until it merged with Colt Corp., which produced handguns for many years until it closed its doors in 2003. Today, only some remnants of The Armoury Company are still standing – most likely due to their rarity both inside and outside of Des Moines!

Many subsequent variations followed during World War II but there was never anything approaching a universal design standard across all manufacturers" Finally after over fifty years it appears that Magazine Capacity may well be one factor influencing how effectively firearms are fired!"

It is the county seat of Polk County and home to the Des Moines Register, one of the most influential daily newspapers in America. The first settlers in what is now Des Moines were French missionaries who arrived in 1787 and founded a small mission near present-day downtown Des Moines. In 1847, during the Mexican–American War, Mexican General Santa Anna moved his army from Pawnee City to cross the Mississippi River into Iowa on horseback with orders to destroy all knowledge of American expansionism before he reached Mexico City. As news spread of Santa Anna's foray across country, residents of nearby Ames decided to form a militia to protect their town against possible attack by their former allies from Mexico. On October 15, 1847, an ordinance was passed allowing for land sales within Polk County without previously owning any property within it. This event became known as "The Day Of The Land Sale." A week later on October 23rd,bound for Council Bluffs (now Omaha), Nebraska Territory Governor Doniphan offered $5 for every acre sold within Polk County boundaries - which would amount to $100 when complete - creating an opportunity for new settlers and entrepreneurs to purchase land in what is now Des Moines over the next few weeks. With only 10 men and two horses available for patrols that November after weekslong drought-strickenIowa Territory had experienced little progress with developing roads or settlements since independence from Great Britain in 1846 In January 1850 John Ruskin purchased 5 acres (2 hectares) northeast of downtown Des Moines from Nicholas Applegate for $10 per acre – making Ruskin one of the earliest farmers in what would become Des Moines Township A post office called Cedar Rapids was established at Cedar Rapids Landing on December 2nd, 1850; it changed its name to Cedar Rapids on February 14th, 1861 because Union troops burned down many homes along Main Street between Burlington Avenue and Center Street during winter operations following Battle Creek Bridge collapse Under President Franklin D Roosevelt's New Deal programs which began operations April 16th,,1932Des Moines Civic Center was built as part of Works Progress Administration () program .
