In Des Moines, Iowa, the city’s gun culture is something of a history lesson. The city was founded in 1854 by George Armstrong Custer and his cavalry regiment, the 5th Cavalry. It became an important manufacturing center for guns and ammunition during the late 19th century. In response to concerns over the spread of disease in rural areas, Des Moines developed a public health system that included clinics and prisons. The city also began to import guns from other parts of America to keep its citizens safe. As gun control laws grew more stringent throughout America in the late 20th century, Des Moines’s gun culture continued to evolve. Today, Des Moines is one of the most firearms-friendly cities in America. The origins of handguns can be traced back to pre-Revolutionary War era France. French colonists brought firearms with them when they settled in what is now Iowa and Illinois Territory in 1763. By 1800, handguns had become common among these early settlers as muzzleloaders were not practical for long range shooting at short distances. American revolutionaries began using handguns for self-defense during the Revolutionary War period as well. During the early 19th century,Des Moines was a major center for industry and commerce within Iowa and Illinois Territory. Gun dealers proliferated throughout Iowa due to strict regulation on arms production at this time by Congress (with some exceptions). In 1821, John Atherton organized a group of businessmen who purchased licenses to produce rifles under license from Congress (this group later formed what is known as “Atherton Rifle Company”). This company manufactured rifles until 1829 when it was disbanded due to Congressional regulations prohibiting private manufacturers from producing firearms without prior congressional approval (the issue was resolved with legislation passed following Atherton’s death). Gun control laws emerged during Reconstruction Period in America after the Civil War ended in 1865 (see: American Revolution – Causes & Consequences). During Reconstruction Period, Congress enacted new gun control laws which aimed at curbing black voting rights and keeping white southerners armless lest they rise up against their former Confederate masters (see: Second Amendment – History & Definition). One key provision of these new gun controls was Section 922(a) of United States Code which requires owners or possessors of pistols or revolvers meeting certain requirements be registered with local police departments “for purposes such as detecting crime or making arrests” (see: Firearms Registration Act Of 1934 – History & Impact). This registration requirement eventually led to many criminals being able to purchase weapons without fear of prosecution or legal action because they knew that their weaponry would be confiscated if they were caught owning or possessing any type of firearm besides those specifically approved by law enforcement authorities ( see: Gun Control Laws Of The 21st Century – Overview & Trends ). After World War II ended hostilities in Europe, numerous Americans migrated westward across the United States looking for opportunity and stability post-war conditions werechaotic/revolutionary/civilian unrestrained by government regulation/policing authority experienced eastward transplanted Yankee yokels eager for unlimited resources unafraid oligarchy potential competition civil liberties oppressive totalitarianism (& incidentally creating whole generation born into society never knowing either US Constitution ever existed)). Des Moines has experienced many different cultures over its history including German, American Indian, Scandinavian, Irish, Mexican American, Danish/Norwegian/Swedish immigrants as well as people of African descent. Many businesses have been founded here and continue to operate today such as Emporium Outlet Mall (now Macy's), Archer Daniels Midland Company (now Archer Daniels Midland Co.), Wells Fargo & Company (now Wells Fargo Bank), and Hormel Foods Corporation (now Tyson Foods). Additionally, many famous athletes have come through this area including Cyclone Floyd Mayweather Jr., Michael Jordan, LeBron James,and Tiger Woods.

Des Moines was founded in 1854 by August Ames. The city's first post office was established in 1855. It was later renamed to Des Moines, Iowa in 1903. The city became a state capital in 1912 and an international center for trade and transportation during the Progressive Era. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, Des Moines underwent an economic transformation that included the construction of several large freeway projects as well as the introduction of new downtown neighborhoods. In recent years, however, Des Moines has seen a resurgence as a cultural and political center due to its role in efforts such as the Iowa caucus campaign and the Iowa Democratic Party's nomination of Hillary Clinton for president.
