Des Moines is a city in Iowa. It was founded in 1847 by Major James K. Polk, who served as the 26th President of the United States. The city is named after Des Moines River, which flows through it. The population of Des Moines was 207,515 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Des Moines were French traders and missionaries in 1692-93. French trader Pierre Le Moyne landed on the present site of Des Moines on May 6, 1693 and named it Miamisburg after his home town of Miamisburg, Ohio. A small community developed near where Fort Worth Street and Fourth Street now stand, but no permanent settlement was made until 1847 when Major James K. Polk settled there with his family. Polk became president due to his support for westward expansion during the Mexican–American War (1846-48). After serving in Congress from 1849-51 and then as governor of Illinois from 1853-57, Polk returned to Iowa and began planning thetownsite known as Polk City today - he believed that an agricultural center would be important for eastern Iowa's growth into a country power. In November 1847, he submitted a petition to Congress asking for federal land east of the Mississippi River be dedicated to develop an agricultural area that could become a model for other western states looking to enter the Union as part of the new nation. The request was granted three months later on December 12th by President George Washington! Polk City quickly grew into one of America's largest cities - its population reached 350,000 by 1860 and 400,000 by 1870! The city's success led to its nickname "The Town That Can Do It All." Many industries soon arrived in town: meatpacking plants (Iowa Beef Packers), flour mills (Flour Mill No 1 & 2), cotton ginners (Cotton Gin Company), breweries (Alcoholic Beverage Company), electrical equipment companies (Kapp Brothers Electric Light & Power Co.), gas stations (GAS COOPERATIVE) and machine shops (Carnegie Machine Works). By 1910 Des Moines had surpassed Chicago as America's leading manufacturing city! Today Des Moines remains an excellent place to live – its climate is perfect for agriculture; its diverse cultural attractions make it a popular tourist destination; and its government services include one of America’s most vibrant downtown areas complete with arts venues and business districts
