Ammunition history in Des Moines, IA began with the first shot in the Iowa State Fair Grounds on September 6th, 1871. The event was a battle of artillery between the United States and Mexico. The first shots were fired from cannons located at Fort Riley and other positions around the fairgrounds. By 1875, there were two rifle ranges open to the public in Des Moines, one located on First Street and the other on Delaware Avenue. The Department of Defense leased Regency Armory from Ames Armorry Company effective July 1st 1945 until May 15th 1949 when it reverted back to Ames Armourry Co., Incorporated effective October 15th 1949 through May 1st 1951 inclusive.
