Davenport, Iowa is a small city located in the northwest corner of Iowa. The population was 397 at the 2010 census. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2 km²), all of it land. The first scopes were built in Davenport in 1875 by Elisha Gray and Wm. Fenton. In 1893, Isaac Newton bought one of these scopes from Fenton and started building his own collection which included four telescopes that he called "Newton's bottles." From 1894-1895, Davenport was home to one of the largest telescope clubs in America with over 100 members! The club also organized several observing expeditions including an expedition to observe Comet Hale-Bopp in 1897! In 1905, Edwin Ayer moved to Davenport and began working for Ames Research Laboratory as their Director of Observatory Programs. In 1912, he developed and installed what is now known as the Ayerscope at Ames! This instrument allowed researchers to image stars very accurately using a combination of simple instruments and powerful lenses! In 1915, Drs. Edward Cray and John Atanasoff developed the first electronic scope using vacuum tubes! These scopes were used extensively during World War II for research on radar technology!

In 1907, Davenport hosted the first international exposition in America, which drew large crowds and led to new development in the city. Davenport, Iowa is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,218 at the 2010 census. The town provides services to the surrounding community of Davenport and is located about 19 miles (30 km) east of Des Moines. The first settlers in the area that would become Davenport were Levi Coffin and his family who arrived in 1836. The town was platted on December 12, 1839 by Hurlbut Wagoner. A post office was established in 1840 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1845, George Fenton opened a mill here which became one of the largest mills west of the Mississippi River. In 1861, Union General John Custer battle-tested this township against Confederate General Samuel Jourdan nearpresent day Mount Pleasant while led an army march from Fort Gibson towards Vicksburg. After this victory over Jourdan, many shops and businesses moved to Davenport from Vicksburg as word spread about Union victory across the Midwest at that time. On January 1st 1870 Davenport had a population of 703 people when it incorporated as a city with its own government On November 15th 1890 Davenport lost its incorporation status when it merged with neighbouring towns Clearwater and Newtonville into what is now called "Davenport-Clearwater". On February 26th 1902 City Hall burned down leaving only three walls standing due to arson by students at nearby Des Moines Normal School; however no one has ever been convicted of arson within the city limits since then In 1912 local poet Alice Paul founded Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated here During World War I various munitions plants were built around town including: Republic Manufacturing Company (now part of PPG Industries), Armour & Co., American Arms Company (now Hoffman-West Corporation), Swift Technical Corporation (later Swiftspeed Technologies), Battery Works No 4 Ammunition Plant #2 – all operated by American Arsenal Company before being taken over by United States Army during World War II As world war Two intensified tensions mounted between America's Allies and Axis powers both sides began producing more weapons than they could keep up with resulting in mass layoffs throughout industry including those at Republic Manufacturing company where thousands of workers lost their jobs after Batteries Works No 4 Ammunition Plant #2 closed down because there wasn't enough ammo to go around causing mass panic among employees who didn't know what to do next

Davenport was founded in 1847 by James Davenport and his wife, Sarah. The city was named for the Davenports' home on the west side of the Mississippi River. The first post office in town was established in 1851. In 1861, Davenport became the capital of Iowa when it was moved from Des Moines to here. The state government relocated here from Council Bluffs in 1868.
