It lies on the Mississippi River near the Illinois state line and it is one of the 10 most populous cities in Iowa. From 1951 until his death in 1978, James Meeks served as Mayor of Davenport with three terms before becoming an assistant U S Attorney general during President Jimmy Carter's second term from 1977 to 1979. During that time period he also served as chairperson of the City Councilwoman’s Association which helped him win election to become head of that body upon Meeks' retirement from government service effective October 1st 1984 He returned to private life following his term as head of public policy for Northern Trust Company where he remains today working with their clients across many industries
