When General Polk reached Davenport on July 1, 1812 – less than two weeks after his inauguration as President – he ordered all available forces here to garrison Fort Dearborn until further notice (the fort had been built by George Washington). At that time little more than a small village lay outside its present boundaries. The city of Des Moines was founded just north of Davenport in 1854 by George Hennepin and others as a result of land speculation surrounding the discovery of a new course of water through rapids on the Missouri River. When railroad construction began through that region in the late 1840s it became necessary to serve both cities with locomotives and rolling stock. A depot was built near what is now Third Street and Second Avenue within minutes of each other; this served as the eastern terminus for trains travelling between Des Moines and Rock Island until 1902 when the Rock Island Railroad abandoned its line east of Cedar Rapids. East-west train serviceA corridor from Cedar Rapids to Dubuque opened on November 5th, 1912 after years of planning by local leaders including Mayor John Murchison (). Although railroads had been operating down that corridor since before that date (the Midland Railway reached Cedar Rapids via Sioux City on October 27th, 1868), this marked officially the beginning of west-to-east Train Service along portions of Interstate 80 from Des Moines to Council Bluffs!
