There are a number of events that have occurred in the town of Davenport, Iowa that have associated with ammo. The first event that is generally considered to take place in the town was the Battle of Vicksburg on July 4, 1862. This battle resulted in the loss of many Confederate soldiers and munitions. Later on, ammunition stores also began to be burned down as a result of Union raids. The largest storage facility for ammunition in Davenport was built by J.P. Morgan for his company Triton Ammunition Company in 1882. The store continued to be used until it was destroyed by fire in 1912.

The first people to inhabit what is now Davenport were Paleo-Indians who arrived in present-day Iowa in 1827 by way of the Great Lakes region. A permanent settlement was founded by Capt. John Doane and his family on November 12, 1836, when they landed at Sacagawea Point on the Mississippi River and named it after their patron saint, Dame Sarah Doane. Doane's father had been baptized at Plymouth Rock by Capt. James Kappes. In 1839, David Rice erected a gristmill on the banks of the White River east of downtown Davenport and completed it in 1840. By 1850, there were over fifty businesses operating in downtown Davenport with an average output of $5 per day! The first post office was established in1851 and was called Poste des Moines; it later became known as Des Moines Post Office (1911). In 1855, Judge George Muhlenberg organized what would becomethe Des Moines School District; he appointed Drury Eller to be its first superintendent In 1865/66 Samuel Morse constructed one of the earliest electric lights using carbon filament found outside North America Downtown business started expanding again during this time with new buildings being erected such as First National Bank (now Wells Fargo) In 1870/71 Elijah Phelps built one of first brick churches west of the Mississippi River The City Hall building now occupied by Wright State University was also constructed during this time In 1872/73 Jno Pritzker donated land for what would become Rathjen Stadium which hosted baseball games until its closure in 1984 After many years featuring various sports teams including football (1889), men’s basketball (1891), women’s hockey (1907), men’s tennis (1910), women’s tennis (1920), racing track located just northwest corner off US 52 near current NDSU campus - raced here every weekend from 1909 through 1951 - finally closed following tornado damage in 1978 It wasn't until 1907 that bicycles began being used for transportation within town limits The history books do not mention those early days when all you could find available space inside or outside your house were Two pumpkins – one fresh and one old

Davenport was founded in 1847 as a small farm town on the Iowa River. The city was named for General John Davenport, who laid out the town and donated land for it. Davenport grew rapidly during the early 1800s, due to its location at the crossroads of several wagon trails and its access to water from the river. By 1892, the population of Davenport had reached 100,000 people. In that year, a railroad came to town and changed how Davenport functioned. Prior to this time, most people walked or took wagons to various businesses in downtown. With rail transportation available local businesses became self-sufficient and began marketing their products directly to consumers rather than relying on truckers or other transportation providers. The arrival of the railroad also resulted in an increase in manufacturing opportunities in town. This led to new construction projects such as a cotton gin and a foundry that helped drive technological advances during the late 19th century.
