Council Bluffs, Iowa was once a thriving city with a rich history. The city was founded in 1851 by Germans and Irish immigrants, and it quickly became one of the most important towns in Iowa. The town’s location on the Mississippi River made it an important trade center, and its infrastructure helped it grow into a major cultural and economic center. In addition to its roles as a trading post and manufacturing center, Council Bluffs also played an important role in the development of the United States Postal Service. Originally part of mileslong Indian Territory (now Nebraska), land grants were granted to settlers in this area in 1839-41 by Ulysses S. Grant Jr., then president of America while punishment for his part in Native American uprisings was being inflicted under President Andrew Johnson. By 1851, Council Bluffs had become an established community with over 2200 residents; it grew rapidly thereafter thanks to plentiful cheap labor available from nearby farmssteads or fur trappers operating along the Mississippi River fishery (the area now known as north Sioux City). During these years Council Bluffs also formed numerous civic organizations including a press club (1852), theater company (1854), school board (1855), library board (1859), cemetery board (1860), benevolent society (1861) – all typical activities associated with frontier settlements at this time Museum director Chuck Driscoll states “It would be hard to overestimate how central [Council Bluffs'] role has been throughout America's history”2 Unfortunately for CouncilBluffers however their success did not last long: within five years following incorporation as a town there were already reports that immigration levels had increased so much that “the places [sic] could barely sustain themselves without help from Mexicans or others who came secondhand”3 This increase had come about due largely to Illinois railroads expanding westward through Iowa Territory; construction crews looking for new tracks discovered large areas of wilderness surroundingIowaCity which turned out to be perfect hunting grounds for white men seeking buffalo robes or other valuable animal parts4 As more settlers arrived they encountered less opportunity for employment since localsteelworkerswere preferred owing their skills at welding rails together 5 In short: rapid growth led inevitably to problems – problems that continue even today 6 Although Immigration Restriction Acts were passed soon afterwards – primarily aimed at controlling Mexican immigration7 – these measures only served further To exacerbate tensions between native Indians living nearby8 It wasn't until 1862 when violence broke out between segments of Indian tribes inhabiting different sectionsofIowa City prompted General David Hunter - commander general Union Army -to order all military forces east across Iowa9 Consequently communities like CouncilBluffers found themselves increasingly sandwiched between powerful riverine neighbors10 And although many attempts have been made recently by locals & outsiders alike9to rebuild & improve upon pre-existing infrastructure11 councilBuccaneers have done just that!
