Today, Wabash Soda Works remains headquartered in downtown Council Bluffs while its parent company Union Carbide Corporation has moved its headquarters to Cincinnati, Ohio since 2007. Council Bluffs, Iowa is a city in Iowa located in the western portion of the state. The population was 43,815 at the 2010 census. It is the most populous city in Iowa and one of the largest cities in Illinois. In Native American times, Council Bluffs was known as Cahokia which means "Great Place." The first European to visit Council Bluffs was Lieutenant Colonel Zachary Taylor on July 24th, 1834. The growth of council Bluffs began with necessity when it became clear that Dubuque would not expand due to lack of land and people. President James K. Polk authorized $2 million for a new courthouse and jail in 1851. By 1870, there were over 100 businesses operating in town including lumberyards, flour mills, banks and other businesses such as hotels and post offices. A railroad arrived in 1892 which helped spur growth even further; during this time period construction began on what is now Mercy Hospital (now UI Hospitals). After World War II Council Bluffs experienced rapid growth with an influx of refugees from Czechoslovakia (1944-1945) as well as Germans from America who had been displaced during the war years. Despite this large influx, many residents still chose to live near their jobs or schools rather than move into larger communities such as Des Moines or Omaha because they felt that CouncilBluffs offered more cultural opportunities than either city did. In 1950-1951, Mayor Harry Hines rebuilt Pioneer Courthouse following a fire that destroyed it two years earlier and also enacted ordinances allowing women to vote and serve on juries beginning on November 3rd of that year
