The Council Bluffs Rifle and Pistol Club was founded in 1892. It has been a part of the Iowa Rifle Association since 1912. The club specializes in target shooting, hunting, and pistols. In 1932, the club became an armory and began to offer training programs for rifle shooters and pistol shooters. The armory also served as a storage facility for guns and ammunition until it closed in 1984. Council Bluffs, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa and the county seat of Scott County. The population was 128,819 at the 2010 census. It is the fourth-largest city in Iowa and one of the largest in Scott County. The town was founded by Mormon missionaries in 1847 as Cottage Grove on a tract of land that had been donated by Joshua Giddings. The name was changed to Council Bluffs in 1854 after Mayor George Atherton persuaded a local election board to change the name from Cottage Grove because it would be more likely to reflect what people were doing instead of where they lived. Council Bluffs became an agricultural center during the 19th century; its biggest industry until World War II was agriculture, but since then it has become an important commercial and cultural center with several high-technology companies located there, including HP, Monsanto, Intel, Microsoft and Twitter. Cultural attractions include two museums – one focused on American Indian culture and history and another on European art – as well as three theaters: one professional theater (the John F Kennedy Presidential Library), one community theater (the McIntosh Center for Arts) and one high school gymnasium/ multipurpose hall (the CityPlex). Grant delivered a speech at the Town Hall in which he announced his candidacy for president in 1872. On November 5th of that year, Salt Lake City was destroyed by an earthquake which killed over 100 people and caused extensive damage to infrastructure across Utah and Western North America. This event is widely considered to have begun the end of Mormonism as a major religion in North America. In 1893, the LDS Church constructed a temple on Ninth Street in Council Bluffs which served as their headquarters until it was destroyed by fire in 1901. In 1978, Council Bluffs played host to the world's first computer game championship when it participated in what is now called "The Game Awards". In 1984-1985, Mayor John Fenton staged an effigy burning campaign against then-Mayor Orville Freeman due to municipal budget cuts necessitated by recessionary conditions throughout Iowa interior cities such as Council Bluffs were experiencing at that time%. At that time only three other American cities were participating in this type of public Burning Campaign; Buffalo NY; Memphis TN; and Wichita KS had also undertaken similar campaigns but with greater nationwide impact given their larger population sizes than Council Bluffs at that time). After much discussion between both Mayor Fenton and then-City Manager Jeffery Auchterhouse about whether or not to stage another effigy burning campaign following Freeman's re-election victory that same year (the campaign failed),[1] ultimately no further actions were taken against Mayor Freeman during those difficult times despite growing public criticism from within our community over government spending decisions made during those tough economic times within our local government jurisdiction specifically targeting inner city communities statewide instead of inner city councils/cities like ourselves].
