Coralville, Iowa is a town in Linn County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,846 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–Kessler metropolitan area. In 1851, the first white men to set foot on what is now Coralville Township were John Pritchard and his brother James Pritchard. They founded a small log cabin here and named it Cedar Rapids. In 1854-5, John Pritchard's son Amos built a larger cabin on this site and named it Coralville after his father's birthplace in England. The first post office in Coralville was established in 1856; it was called Cedar Rapids and served for two years until Indian removal forced its closure in 1858. The town name came about because of local coral trees that grew abundantly near the original cabin site. A large piece of coral from this tree still remains on Main Street today (the old courthouse). During the early 1800s many settlers arrived to Polk County looking for new land to farm and build their homes by crossing the Mississippi River into what is now east-central Iowa. Many of these pioneers located their homes along present day US Highway 6 within what is now Coralville Township. Construction began on numerous dwellings and stores within this township during this time period as people searched for an opportunity to purchase property that would offer good elevation, fertile soils, water supply, peaceful surroundings, hunting opportunities and access to transportation such as wagon roadsides throughout much of central Iowa which led them closer to cities like Des Moines or Rock Island where they could buy goods then take them back home wherever they lived
