Coralville is a small town in the U.S. state of Iowa, located on the west side of the Missouri River. The population was 792 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. The first people to live in Coralville were probably Meskwaki Indians who hunted and fished in local rivers and creeks. The original settler was David Smith, who bought land from the Meskwaki in 1836. He built a log cabin on his farm which he called "Cedar Rapids." Smith's son, John B., moved to Coralville from Boston, England in 1847 and started a grocery store there with his brother-in-law, Amos Cook. In 1865, John B.'s wife died; he then married Martha Ladd, who had come to Coralville from Muscatine County, Iowa four years earlier as a girl of 15. They raised six children before they sold their farm and moved away from Coralville in 1928 to start a new life near Omaha, Nebraska. However, during the post-war years Coralville struggled to maintain its high level of development as other communities surged ahead. By the late 1970s, however, Coralville had regained some of its former glory with a thriving real estate industry and a growing population of retirees. Today, Coralville is an important cultural center in eastern Iowa responsible for supporting many local businesses including several colleges and universities as well as numerous public services such as parks and libraries.
