Coralville is a town in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. Coralville is located on the east bank of River Road between I-235 and US-6 south of Cedar Rapids. The first settlers in Coralville were George and Anna Miller who arrived in 1847. They established a farm on what is now Elm Street. Another early settler was James Hatton who arrived in 1855. He built a cabin on what is now Main Street. In 1861, Isaac McIntyre settled here and started a gristmill that still stands today near Center Avenue and River Road. Other early residents included John Osborne (1859), James Wills (1862), Daniel Fenton (1865), Andrew Kettelberger (1867), Abraham Weller (1868), Reuben Tompkins (1870) and Moses Kingman (1872). In 1875, brothers Amos & Milton Green bought land from McIntyre for $1,500. They started to make bricks for the new brick courthouse which was built that year along State Highway 6 north of town center. The cornerstone for the courthouse was laid by Amos Green on July 4th with Revs Jesse Leland and Ebenezer Cogswell officiating. The original courthouse burned down in 1916 but was rebuilt nearby as the current building which still stands today. In 1902, father Jonas Sorenson came to Coralville from Norway with his family to start an agricultural soundness demonstration project known as "Sollenmarken". The project aimed to improve farming practices around Polk County through research into soil quality, crop rotation, irrigation systems, etc.. After two years of work he returned home empty-handed but with valuable information he had collected about Iowa agriculture which he used to start his own successful farm near Sharon Springs some time later! Coralville enjoyed its heyday during World War II when many businesses operated including three breweries: Drake's Brewery(1941-1945), J&J's Brewery(1945-1946) and Stroud's Brewing Company(1946-1950). In addition several stores such as Ruby's Hardware & More(1946)and Peoples Drug Store(1950) opened up along with numerous other businesses during this time period including banks: First National Bank(1945-1966), Citizens National Bank(1966-1970) and Trustlocke Hardware.(1970-) Finally after more than fifty years it closed its doors for good on November 15th 1990 due to lack of customers/support even though it continued operations online until about 2005 when it went outof business again!
