Coralville is a city in Polk County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,819 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Coralville is located on the Vermilion River and it straddles both banks of that river. The first settlers in what is now Coralville were Methodists who came from Tennessee in 1849. They founded a log cabin on the banks of the Vermilion River and named their settlement after coral (a type of shellfish). The Methodists built a brick church and school in 1851 which still stands today. In 1860, General James Kossuth rode his horse across the Iowa state line to Cedar Rapids and helped start the town movement there. When he left for Illinois, many residents followed him and started various towns throughout Polk County. One such town was Cedar Rapids which became known as "Kossuth City." In 1871, John Ewing bought land north of what is now Coralville from Peter O’Neill for $1 million dollars. He began to build what would become one of America's largest cotton plantations – Ewing & Sons Cotton Mill – which produced over 350 acres (160 hectares) of cotton per day until it closed in 1908. Over time other businesses also grew up around this mill including hospitals, grocery stores, churches and schools; all while jobs continued to be created at the mill through its continuance as an important engine of economic growth for Coralville during its early years. A new community was born out of this boom when Ewing decided to build another millsite adjacent to his original property – Bloomsburg – with plans to house 800 people inside a ring road encircling both communities with access via private streets leading into each one. This "Ewings City" area saw rapid development beginning in 1916 when two firms - Stroud-Lippincott Paper Company and J&J Glass Works - merged to form American Glass Works Incorporated (AGW). AGW soon became one of Des Moines' most powerful industrial families with interests stretching beyond papermaking into autos, rubber products, tires and other fabricated products before finally exiting gracefully from these activities altogether by 1978 having disposed of more than 2 million square feet (210 thousand m2) worth of production equipment at its plant on South Third Street within six months! A new paper company called Wiggin soon took AGW's place producing recycled content for local dumps before being purchased by Dow Chemical Co., later becoming DuPont Corporation; lasting until 1984 when it too ceased operations due largely To environmental concerns about lead contamination arising from nearby manufacturing processes at duPont's Erie Paper Company subsidiary! In recent decades much redevelopment has taken place around US Highway 169/US Highway 281 intersection just east of downtown Coralville as new housing developments are sprouting like weeds near popular shopping areas such as Walmart Supercenter and Sears Roebuck & Co.'s main store - further evidence that even amidst tough times some businesses continue robust growth while others slip away unnoticed...such is life in rural America!

Coralville was founded in 1855 by George Fenton and his wife Rebecca. The town grew rapidly and soon had a population of over 100 people. Coralville became an important center for the agricultural community, with its own cotton gin, store, and post office. The town also developed a rich cultural heritage, including notable artists such as Edward Hopper and Winifred Sargent. In the 1940s, Coralville was destroyed by a fire that destroyed most of the town's buildings. However, due to donations from local residents, reconstruction began almost immediately and Coralville regained its former prominence as a thriving smalltown. Today, Coralville is known for its history and culture, as well as its popular tourist attractions such as its art galleries and restaurants.
