Coralville was founded in 1851 by John F. Smith and his wife, Marilla, on a tract of land that they had purchased from the Sioux. The population of Coralville peaked at 20,000 in 1910 and declined to 11,500 by 1920. However, due to new construction and development within the town limits, Coralville’s population began to rebound in the latter half of the twentieth century and reached its current level of 22,500 in 2000. During its early years, Coralville experienced rapid growth because it was located on a major trade route connecting Chicago with Omaha and other points east. consequently there were many businesses established along Main Street including two banks (the first being built on what is now High Street), several stores/warehouses, a blacksmith shop and a hotel/motel. Over time however these businesses lost their importance as traffic traveling through Addison County decreased; instead new transportation options such as highways made travel more convenient for residents. Additionally With automobiles becoming more prevalent throughout Iowa during this time period coralvillians started enjoying outdoor activities such as fishing or golfing which were once considered luxuries only available to those who could afford much larger homes or drove horses and buggies around town center

However, it has since regained some of its former prominence as a vibrant community that attracts residents from throughout central Iowa."
