Coralville is a town in Des Moines County, Iowa, United States. The population was 7,853 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Des Moines-West Des Moines Metropolitan Statistical Area. Coralville is located on the north bank of the Iowa River, about 18 miles (29 km) west of downtown Des Moines. The first permanent settler in Coralville was Edwin Shaver in 1854. He and his family came from Illinois and operated a ferry service across the river until they built their own ferryboat in 1857. They also raised corn and hay for sale on their property which became known as "Shavers Corn".[1] In 1865, Wm Hite built a gristmill on what is now Broadway Street in Coralville; it remains operational to this day. In 1870, John Barker established a blacksmith shop on what is now Elm Street in Coralville and it still operates as an independently owned business today. In 1875, George Pullen organized what would become known as "The Methodist Episcopal Church" in Coralville; it has been serving its community ever since. A fire destroyed most of the town's buildings during a severe storm on October 9th, 1886, but mercantile interests rebuilt much of them within weeks with local limestone! On November 5th 1890,[2] Ohio State Senator James Gavan filed legislation creating Polk County out of parts of Miami County that were too large for Polk to govern alone; coralvilians supported Gavan's efforts despite protests from some merchants who saw Polk county as an opportunity to expand their businesses into new territory.[3] In 1893,[4] William J. Doherty opened up one of the first general store chains in America when he opened Doherty Bros., Incorporated – now known as Walmart – along Cedar Avenue near Broadway Street.[5][6][7][8] The post office at 4333 Cedar Avenue was established on December 3rd 1909[9], making Coralville one of the earliest rural post offices west of Interstate 80! The community also experienced rapid growth during World War I with many small businesses being founded due to wartime shortages! After World War II ended both commercial and military activity declined significantly; however, new development began to take shape over time including several apartment complexes and multiple shopping malls that have grown up around town.[10][11][12][13] Today there are few if any original buildings left remaining from1885-1920; however many residents commute into larger metropolitan areas such as Des Moines or Iowa City through arterial streets such as State Highway 516 or US 624

The first settlers of Coralville were Anthony Farnsworth and his wife Eliza. They arrived in 1836 from New York City with their two children, John and Esther. The Farnsworth family soon built a log cabin on the banks of the Des Moines River. The Farnsworths were among the early pioneers of what would become Coralville. They were instrumental in developing this small settlement into an eventual community that thrived for over 100 years! Today, Coralville remains one of the most vibrant communities in Cedar County! Its residents are proud to have played an important role in the history of their community and are committed to providing quality local services and amenities to its citizens. In recent years, Coralville has seen significant growth thanks to new development projects such as Interstate 35W (which provides transportation between Cedar Rapids and Sioux City), numerous professional sports teams (including both MLB’s Milwaukee Brewers & NFL’s Miami Dolphins) as well as dozens of retail businesses including several HEB stores - all anchored by one major grocery store chain!
Coralville was founded in 1854 by John and Eliza Coral. It is the oldest town in Iowa. The town was named after a coral reef that is located near the original site of the town. The reefs provided fresh water for the community and were also used for fishing. The Town of Coralville had a population of about 100 people when it was first established. In 1870, the town's population reached 350 people. By 1910, the population had increased to 1,000 people. In 1930, Coralville became an incorporated city.
