Clive is a small town in Douglas County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines–Urbandale Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clive is home to Clive Elementary School and Clive High School. Clive was founded in 1881 by Jesse and Jennie Lunsford as a small farming community on the banks of the Mississippi River. The name "Clive" came from an old Sioux word meaning "a place where goods were brought downriver." In 1916, when Clyde Hanks bought land east of Clive from his father-in-law, he changed its name to Hanksville after himself. The first post office in Clive was established in 1885, and it remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1886. The first settler in Clive was John Witherspoon who arrived with his family on November 17, 1881. He built a log cabin near the present day elementary school on what is now State Highway 97A. Witherspoon's son James Witherspoon also settled in Clive and later became mayor of Clive. Another early settler was George McKinney who arrived there on July 12, 1882 along with his wife Mary Ann McCarthy and their two children Laura and John Purdy McKinney . From these early settlers comes the town's nickname of "The Crossing". Clive had its peak population growth during World War II when many people worked for Iowacrafts or other war industries located nearby such as Midway Airport or Lawrence Army Air Field; however, today most residents are engaged primarily in agricultural pursuits although some still commute to west Des Moines for work opportunities . In 1970, Clarendon Township annexed neighboring Byron Township which then merged into Clarendon Township again which then annexed adjacent townships Totowa (1947), Ames (1948), Carbon Hill/Cedar Rapids (1950) , Newton (1955) , Franklin Heights (1959) before finally merging into Clarendon township again which then annexes adjacent townships Ryan Valley/Newton Beach (1968), Mount Pleasant (1972), Clear Lake City Limits Chapin Park Addition* (*the addition includes parts of Clear Lake City limits that are not within any incorporated municipality) In 1974 Community Services District No 516 reorganized itself into Clarendon Township Municipal Utility District #2 following passage by the Iowa Legislature of a bill entitled "An Act To Authorize Community Services District No 516 To Extend ServiceArea ToAdd Other Towns And Villages Within ItsDistrict" Clarendon Township Municipal Utility District #2 provides water service to all unincorporated areas within its boundaries as well as extends service to portions of Cedar Rapids and Waterloo counties outside its jurisdictional bounds while also providing transportation services including express delivery through rural routes to residents within those counties

Clive and his wife Sarah, who were both natives of Liverpool, England. Clive served as county treasurer from 1851 to 1863 and as mayor from 1861 to 1865. The original Adobe Walls Monument, a granite obelisk that stands overlooking Clivetown square, was dedicated on June 1, 1868. In 1924, the town incorporated and changed its name to Clive.[1] Clive is known for its Midwestern hospitality and for being home of the world's smallest basketball court (the "Clyde Court" court measures just 9 feet wide by 6 feet deep). The court can be seen from most of Clivetown Square. Additionally, the football field at Clive High School is also significant in town history; it has been used as an event center and training ground for local police officers since before they became part of the Iowa State Patrol. Clive's economy primarily revolves around agriculture; although there are some small businesses here too, most residents rely on agricultural work or services provided by nearby towns and farms. Other industries that have played a role in Clare's recent history include manufacturing (a few factories have closed down over time), service jobs such as health care or retail sales (although much of this industry has been replaced by online shopping), and professional sports teams playing their games elsewhere during off-season months (such as baseball or softball) so that Clare can maintain its reputation as a warm-and-friendly community hosting events for locals and visitors alike throughout winter months when other places might close up shop because of lack of business activity/visitorship
