The town was named for its founder, Clive who had been a surveyor in the area. The original plat of the town was only 10 acres wide and it took 3 years to complete. In 1861, the first school opened in Clive and operated for one year before being closed due to financial difficulties. The first post office opened in Clive in 1865 and continued operation until 1971. The first store in Clive was built on Main Street and served the community for over 60 years. In addition to the store, the first house in Clive was built around 1860. Over time, other businesses were established such as a bakery, carpenter shop, laundry and doctor’s office. In 1969, after many years of deterioration within the walls of the old schoolhouse (now part of the Heritage Center), a new building was erected on land adjacent to Main Street which served as both the high school and primary cultural center for Clarendon Township until 1986 when it moved to its present location on State Highway 6 north of town. In 1978-1979 there were major changes within Clarence township with incorporation into Limestone County; however local government remained unchanged until 1987 when Clarendon Township lost all power to Limestone County officials when a millstone measure passed by referendum failed to include Clarendon Township among those providing services within Limestone County! The history of Clive starts with three brothers who founded what would become known as Clive during an era where townships were not commonly formed or maintained outside larger counties like Iowa Territory (which at that time included much of Minnesota). It seems that these early pioneers had some type of idea that they wanted their own little corner o’ country where they could live out their days farming or surveying/planning their territory! From this humble beginning we can see how local residents have supported CLIVE through every step along our journey from just two storefronts open for business back in 1865 up until now - an active community spanning more than 100 Years! Today we continue celebrating all that has been accomplished here since those early days including our annual parade down Main Street filled with clapping citizens & plentyof laughs!
