Clive, IA is a small town in the western Iowa Valley. The population was 1,672 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area and is located about 25 miles west of downtown Des Moines. The first gun case in Clive occurred on January 9, 1875 when John Dickey shot and killed three mounted men near the community's courthouse square. A group of farmers formed a posse to investigate and discovered that Dickey had purchased two shotguns from one of the men involved in the crime. This event helped to solidify gun ownership as a centerpiece of Clive society. In 1903, Mayor J.B. Deasy became the first person to be arrested with an illegal weapon when he was apprehended with a revolver at his home after purchasing it from an outlaw bandit named Harry Hagan. This event helped to further stigmatize handguns as banned items in Clive society and led to their eventual re-introduction into normal use by law enforcement officials. Clive's role as a center for agriculture has also played a significant role in itsGun Ownership history; since guns were necessary for harvesting crops, many residents acquired firearms in order to protect themselves from bandits or other criminals who might try to steal their crops or livestock during this time period.
