Clive, Iowa was first settled in 1836 by English immigrants. The town was named for Major General Israel Ziegler, who had served in the Mexican-American War and then helped found Des Moines. In 1841, the town developed into a small farming community with about fifty residents. By 1890, Clive had reached its peak as an agricultural town with a population of around 1,000 people. However, the Great Depression hit Clive hard and the population decreased to just 350 people by 1930. After World War II, the town slowly regained its former level of growth and prosperity until the 2000s when it started to experience declines in both economic activity and population.

Clive was founded in 1847 by a group of men from Taylor County, Iowa. The town was named for Captain Clive, the British explorer who discovered the Iowa River in 1836. The town grew quickly and by 1860 had a population of 1,500 people. In 1869, Clive became a city and soon developed into one of the largest in Iowa. It played an important role in the history of both Iowa and America. Clive experienced significant growth during its early years as a settlement. Its residents built numerous businesses and civic organizations such as the city council, school board, post office, fire department, and more. Clive also became known for its delicious cottonseed milk which was highly popular among local farmers and consumers alike. The town's notoriety led to it being designated as one of America's "Top Ten Cotton Mills" by Forbes magazine in 1928. However, despite all these benefits, Clive's growth came at a cost. Residents began moving out of the town during the late 1800s due to changing economic conditions and other pressures from larger cities across America. By 1920, only 300 people lived in Clive while buses service radius regularly served neighboring towns like Dubuque and Cedar Rapids much faster than when it started! In contrast to many other American towns that lost their population over time because of TOURNAMENT-like changes taking place within their communities (e.g., Omaha becoming an all-night partytown), Clive actually experienced relatively slow decline until around 1960 when new residents moved into the area following major development along I-80 corridor nearby! Nonetheless, today there are still several lively community functions held each year throughout downtown Clive including art exhibits/movies outdoors on lovely summer days or inside cozy shops - letting locals know just how much fun is still being had right hereabouts!

The original home of the Clive family was a log cabin on the corner of Second Street and Maple Avenue. The town grew rapidly as settlers arrived from all over the Midwest to start new lives and agriculture became Clive's mainstay economy. In 1907, the first post office was established in Clive, and mail service continued until 1978. In 1940, the first high school in Clive opened, followed by Clarendon Junior High School in 1951. The current high school, Keystone Community High School, was built in 1984 and is located on Lockridge Road east of town. Keystone features a variety of sports programs including football (the team won state championships in 1976 and 1998), wrestling (won state championships three times between 2000-2004), soccer (won state championships twice between 2006-2010), golf (won state championships twice between 2010-2012) and cross country (won state championships four times).
