Clive is a town in Muscatine County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines Metropolitan Area. Clive was platted in 1867 and named for Captain Clive of HMS "Dolphin" during the Opium War. The first post office in Clive was established on July 24, 1867, and continued to serve until it closed on October 3, 1868. The first settler in Clive was Jameson who arrived there from Illinois on May 12, 1868. He built a cabin near what is now First Street and California Avenue. In 1870-71 two more settlers arrived from Illinois; John Stevens and Wesley Cook. They erected a log cabin on what is now Second Street near present day Wells Fargo Road. A third settler, Jesse Weiser arrived in 1865 from Germany with his family of six children and wife Anna Maria Weiser (died 1890). He farmed land around present day Third Street and Center Drive until he sold it to J P Smith in 1889 for $1,000 cash which he paid off with interest payments of $5 per month! In 1895 City Councilman Charles Hickey bought 10 acres east of town along Center Drive for $10 per acre after hearing about an offer by local farmer John Iverson to sell 20 acres near the edge of town for $15 per acre! Hickey donated this land to Clarendon Township through deed given September 9th 1909 as recorded at Clifton County Deed Book 2 pgs 384-385."
