Clive, Iowa is a small town located in the southeast corner of Iowa. It was founded in 1845 by John Clive and his wife Susan. The first store in Clive was built on the east side of Main Street. In 1848, the Clive Post Office was established and it remained in operation until 1951. The first school was opened in Clarendon Schoolhouse in 1888. The present-day Clive Elementary School building was built in 1907 and has been used as a school since then. The town had an early firearm industry with many guns being made from wood or recycled materials. Some of the earliest firearms were muzzleloaders, shotguns and pistols made from different materials including oakum (a type of bark), cottonseed oil, beeswax and lead shot for hunting game animals. By 1870, gun manufacturers had started to ship firearms throughout the state of Iowa using steamboats to reach smaller towns like Clarendon and other locations around central Iowa. In 1896, the first shooting club called “The Optimist” was established at Clarendon Schoolhouse with thirty-six members dues free for those who could attend monthly meetings held there. This club helped promote rifle Shooting Competition events that were being held throughout the state at that time which led to increased interest in firearms among local residents. Rifle Shooting Competition events continue to this day as one of the main features of Clarendon Park festivities each year! During World War I, Clifton Rifles manufactured rifles for use by American troops stationed overseas as part of President Woodrow Wilson’s America First policy goal to arm all Americans so they could protect their country against any future aggression by other countries! Clive also played an important role during World War II when many local businesses produced munitions such as ammunition, gasoline tanks and fighter planes! After the war ended, most local businesses closed down but some managed to keep running such as The Wagon Wheel restaurant which reopened after being remodeled into a gunsmith shop! Today, Clarendon Park still contains many relics from previous years including an old post office building where rifle shooting competitions are still taken place every year!

Clive was originally named Hoggstown after the family's farm there. The McCarthys moved to Clive in 1853 and started a cotton gin there. In 1865, the town was renamed after Sir James Fenton, 1st Baronet of Darnley who donated land for the development of the community. The population of Clive was 1,515 at the 2000 census. Clive is located on State Highway 27 about 20 miles (32 kilometers) east of Des Moines and 30 miles (48 kilometers) south-southwest of Cedar Rapids. It lies on a flat plateau surrounded by rolling hills, with an average elevation of above sea level. The downtown area is dominated by a large cotton gin which still stands today as one of Clive's most popular tourist attractions. Other major buildings include the high school, library, courthouse, post office and ambulance station.

Clive is located on the Mississippi River and has a large cotton gin and other businesses in the town center. The main street in Clive is called "Gillespie Street". In 1881, when Elisha Gillespie opened his general store in Clive, he became one of the first people to sell groceries door to door in what is now known as Sioux City. Clive was originally named Southampton after an Englishman who had settled thereabouts some time before. A post office was established at Clive in 1875, and it continued to be used until 1907. In 1899, Clive voters elected their own school board with Wm Swayne as superintendent. At that time school district consolidation came into effect in Clay County; therefore, Southampton became part of the new Clive School District #1. The name of Gillespie Street for much of its early history reflects this fact; however, over time it reverted back to its original name from 1881-1907. In 1916 (just prior to World War I), local farmers began planting crops such as corn and beans on what today would be considered high ground east of town near present day US Highway 6 and Old Ulysses Road/Griffin Road junction; these fields remain today adjacent to United Methodist Church on Northeast 2nd Street which forms Claremont Avenue across from the old business district still standing including many storefronts dating back to prewar days when most residents worked within walking distance of their homes or shops nearest by if they were lucky enough not living inside a city limits governed by aldermen who voted without ELECTION mandate! Today's residential areas have replaced much older commercial districts dating back decades ago which are all gone except for two few blocks north along Old Ulysses Road/Griffin Rd junction + south along Northeast 2nd Street where several live today+ enjoy easy access downtown Claremont Avenue 'walkable' neighborhoods still offer easy access + public transportation minutes away
