Clive is a small town in the heart of the Iowa State Fairgrounds. It's known for its annual corn festival, which is one of the biggest events in town. Clive also has a small grocery store and bar, as well as two schools - Clive Elementary and Clive Middle School. The population of Clive was 1,569 at the 2000 census. The first settler in Clive was Jethro Parsons, who came to land near what is now Clive on May 10, 1836. He named his property "Parsonsville," after himself and his son Gideon. When it was platted into townships in 1847, Parsonsville had a population of 5 inhabitants and consisted only of Mr. Parsons' house and some fields around it. In 1864, when the Des Moines River was dammed up by United States Army Corps of Engineers to create Lake Clifton (which today forms part of Iowa State University), Mr. Parsons donated 4 acres along its banks to be used for school purposes. This became Clive Township #2 on October 15, 1865. Clive Elementary School opened its doors on September 21, 1915 with just 30 students! Today it serves over 500 students from kindergarten through 12th grade from all over northeast Iowa! Claudius Rhodes served as Principal until he retired in 2002 after 31 years service! From then on until current Principal Richard Kapp took office back in 2012-13 (a position that he still holds today), Claudius Rhodes was an Assistant PrincipalLoader during most classes while Richard Kapp handled more administrative duties! In 1977-1978 the Clarendon Building burned down; however this did not stop the revival efforts which began shortly thereafter under new leadership including Mrs Bobbie Dodds who soon became Headmistress With increased enrollment starting in high school (around 300 students) Mrs Dodds decided that her daughter Carole would become their next Headmistress and soCarole started teaching 3rd thru 6th grades inside Clarendon Building from 1978-1982 Heather Post took over 7th thru 8th grades from 1982-1984 before moving onto 11th thru 12th grade where she remains to this day In 1992-1993 a brand new building was built adjacent to Clarendon Building providing much needed classrooms/ offices/maintenance areas for both schools whilestill allowing use of Clarendon Building classroom spaces during special events such as carnivals or state fairs
