Griggs, who arrived in Clive in 1854 and started a grocery store. Over time, Griggs grew his business into one of central Iowa’s largest grocery stores with over 100 employees. He also developed a wide range of other businesses including cattle ranching and agricultural products sales. Griggs’ accomplishments at Clare were not limited to his store or business activities however; he also played an important role in developing early local political institutions andserving as mayor multiple times between 1861-1865. Additionally, he donated land to help build Ottumwa’s first school (now known as Prairie View A&M University) and helped fund other aspects of its development such as roads and Housing Authority buildings later on in its history.
Clive, Iowa is a small town located in Crawford County, Iowa, about an hour and a half north of Des Moines. The population was 1,284 at the 2000 census. Clive is one of the few towns in Crawford County that has not shrunk since its founding. It still retains many of its original buildings and businesses from when it first began to grow as a town. Clifton post office was established in 1878 and closed in 1971. Located near the heart of Clive, its location made it responsible for much of the growth during this time period. In 1893, local farmers formed a cooperative to raise corn and other grains on their own properties which led to Clive becoming known as "The Grain Capital of the Midwest." In 1907, residents formed the Clive-Marshalltown Improvement Association to improve roads and pave streets in what would become an important part of town development over the years. Today, most aspects of Clive's history are celebrated through annual events such as Heritage Days or Town Fairs which celebrate various aspects of its culture including music (clifton has two professional bands), literature (the Clarendon Library is open all week for visitors to check out materials from both before and after World War II), food (the summer BBQs are some of the most popular events), arts & crafts (the monthly Arts & Crafts show features artist demonstrations from local artist studios), etc.
