The city is named after Edwin Dearborn Clive who donated land for its construction and resided there until his death in 1901 at age 92 years old. The original name for Clive was "Union City". On July 9, 1904, an act to change the name to "Clive" passed both houses of the Iowa General Assembly and was signed by Governor John Aiken on July 11th; this action made Clare official local name as well as municipal government designation for all residents regardless of their previous affiliation with Union City or any other municipality within Indianola County (now Polk County). The current mayor is Tom McGowan (D), who won election unopposed on November 8th 2017 after being opposed by two other candidates who withdrew from running due to term limits – longtime Mayor Don Nehlen (R) and newcomer Jeff Sella (D). On October 6th 2017 it was announced that incumbent Mayor Tom McGowan would not run for re-election because he had reached his term limit as Mayor according to Iowans Constitution article V section 2(a).
