From 1889 to 1902, Clinton was part of the Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). During this time period, a railroad was built through the area andClinton began to prosper as a center for trade. In 1907, local banks merged to form the First National Bank of Clinton. The bank continued to grow and became one of Iowa's largest banks before folding in 1916 during World War I. In 1919, during Prohibition era, Clinton became one of the first communities in Iowa to ban liquor sales altogether. It remains one of its most notable achievements as an Alcoholics Anonymous sponsor community today!
