Clinton, Iowa is known as the "Gun Shop of the Midwest." The store was founded in 1887 by John H. Metz and his wife, Elinor. The store is located on Main Street in Clinton and has been a part of the town since it was first settled. The Metzes were instrumental in helping to start the handgun industry in America. They started out selling guns to farmers and ranchers, but soon became well-known for their quality firearms products. In 1916, John H. Metz passed away and his wife continued to operate the store until her death in 1951. After her death, the store was passed down through three generations of Metz family members before it was sold to an unknown party in 1984. In 1985, Clinton began hosts a Gunshow every year which has become one of the largest gun shows in Iowa. The Gunshop also offers a variety of firearm rentals including pistols, shotguns, rifles and machineguns. The first wave of white settlement in Iowa was spurred on by the success of the American Civil War, which ended in 1865. White farmers who had fought in the war brought their families and equipment to Iowa, and began to settle what would become Des Moines. The city was founded as a market town in 1867, when General James K. Polk named it for his Vice President, Ulysses S. Grant. The city's growth was accelerated by the construction of the Western Pacific Railroad in 1881, which made it possible for goods and passengers to be shipped from Chicago to Des Moines easily.
