Clinton is a small town in Polk County, Iowa. The Clinton post office was established on October 5, 1847, and served until it closed on December 15, 1961. Clinton has had a few name changes over the years and its current name is most likely derived from General James H. Clinton who fought in the Mexican-American War and was later United States President from 1881 to 1893. The town of Clinton was platted in 1847 by Stephen A. Douglas and others as the site for a new county seat for Polk County based on Indian land grants given to several families including the Douglases, Gibbsons, Mountsacs and other early settlers. Incorporated as a village on January 1st of 1851 under guidance of then-Mayor Sargent with sixty acres (248 m²) surveyed lot numbered 2 within Platte River Township northwest of present-day Burlington Heights; this would be followed by Appleton (July 12th1856), Norfolk (October 6th1860), Muscatine (January 20th1862), Douglas (March 4th1865), Winnebago (August 10th1867)and finally Clinton two weeks later on October 5th following approval from all six villages prior to becoming an incorporated city with five hundred fifty acres (2 km²) platting located north/northwest of downtown along Wapello Avenue between First Street eastward to Third Street westward extending northerly one block southwesterly thence eastward unbroken until reaching Elmira Road just beyondpresent-day Waterlooavedge; this would be followed by Ankeny four months lateron November 17th 1865 having previously been granted charter privileges pursuant to section 827a(2)(A) Iowa Code giving its citizens “the right” automatically to become charter members retroactive thereto under certain circumstances including service or residence therein during any term or periods thereof constituting more than three months consecutively before such membership became effective provided said City has not been revoked except for revocation caused by war or insurrection declared BY THE PEOPLE OF IOWA

Clinton was born on January 17, 1879, in the town of West Des Moines, Iowa. He attended public school and then high school in Des Moines. Clinton began his college career at Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He then transferred to the University of Michigan where he obtained a degree in law. After starting practice as an attorney in Chicago, Illinois, he Suffered a heart attack on November 5th, 1945 and died from the event.
