Clinton is located in the eastern part of Iowa and has been inhabited by Native Americans for centuries. During the Civil War (1861-1865), Clinton was pivotal due to its strategic location on the Mississippi River between Vicksburg and Corinth. As Union forces advanced southward they passed through Clinton twice – once on July 4th and again on September 16th. On both occasions Union General Nathan Bedford Forrest ordered his troops to attack local defenses without warning or chance for resistance. After the war ended (1865), Clinton experienced rapid growth due to its position as a transportation hub linking eastern Iowa with Chicago via the Mississippi River. This prosperity led to increased demand for guns and ammunition which resulted in an increase in gun barrel production throughout America during this time period.
