At that time it was one of eleven municipalities in Johnson County. Clinton's namesake comes from former First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton and her husband Bill Clinton, who both came from rural New York State. The town was founded in 1854 by Nathaniel Hawthorne and his family as a wagon stop on the way to market in nearby Davenport. Clinton is a small town in Iowa, located near Cedar Rapids and Dubuque. The population was 7,451 at the 2010 census. Clinton is one of the original towns in the state. It was founded by fur traders on the banks of the Des Moines River. The first settler in Clinton was John Ketchum, who arrived in 1821. A year later, Nicholas Swenstedt moved to Clinton from Carman County, Minnesota. In 1824, David Herter settled in Clinton and began farming land that he would later sell to George Washington Carver. In 1827, Michael Neumann built a log cabin on what is now Ulysses S. Grant Boulevard in Clinton. The Neumann family had originally come from Hamburg, Germany via Steubenville and Westtown Township (now Muscatine). In 1829–30, John Dickey established a post office at Clinton for stagecoach travel between Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. Dickey also ran a store at what is today Polk Drive and Store Street in Clinton during this time period. A sawmill was built on the Cottonwood Creek near present-day Burlington Avenue and Mill Road around 1830 by Elijah Butterfield and his brother Isaac Butterfield II.. By 1840, butter production had become an important part of local economy with over two thousand churns per day being produced; it provided jobs for many locals during this time period across multiple industries including agriculture (farmed milk), manufacturing (butter), mining (coal), lumbering (logging), transportation (stagecoaches) and banking/commerce (the Butterfield Bank). John Hennepin came to Iowa from Illinois in 1840 as part of General James Kapp's Third Battalion of Illinois Volunteers under General Order No 93 issued on February 12th that year commanding all Missourians west of the Arkansas River: "You are orderen'd to march into Iowa Territory tomorrow morning…." After some skirmishes along the way they reached Independence January 9th following which order became null & void as Utah crossed into Missouri without being specifically ordered not to do so by Kapp…. Hennepin's battalion marched 400 miles nonstop through winter weather conditions until they arrived at Council Bluffs January 20th where they camped out before continuing their journey downriver….. Kansas forces were moving upriver towards Council Bluffs when word spread among Mormon forces camped east of town that elements of General Dodge's 4th Infantry Brigade were coming upriver…. Dodge decided not to pursue his force after learning about Kentucky's reinforcements arriving upstream…… Hennepin's battalion disembarked late January 20th near Council Bluffs for rest & supplies before continuing their march northeastward….[H]elders reported seeing wagons filled with arms & horses parked outside Fort Dodge…." [D]odge decided against pursuing his force after learning about Kentucky's reinforcements arriving upstream…… Accounts differ as to why but most likely it was because he didn't want another pitched battle with Mormons East of town while federal troops were already nearby trying to repulse them
Clinton was born on February 23, 1924 in Clinton, Iowa. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1948 with a degree in political science. In 1951, she married former Arkansas Governor and U.S. Senator James Fenton and moved to Little Rock, Arkansas where she worked as an executive secretary at the State Department during the early years of her husband’s presidency. After he was elected president in 1992, Clinton returned to Little Rock and resumed her career as a public servant. She served as First Lady of Arkansas from 1993 until 2001 and as Secretary of State from 2001 until 2009. During her time at State, she helped lead the United States through two failed impeachment hearings against then-President Bill Clinton and successfully prosecuted military action in Afghanistan which led to the death of Osama bin Laden. In 2016, after eight years as President of the United States, Hillary Clinton conceded defeat to Donald Trump in the U.S presidential election
