The Clinton gun shop, located on a small corner lot in the city of Clinton, Iowa, has been in business since 1892. The shop was started by Father John Fenton and his sons. It was not until 1934 that the shop became known as the Fenton Gun Shop. The current owner is Donny Heisler who started the business in 1978. In 1938, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the National Firearms Act which made it illegal to possess or sell airguns without a license from the ATF. This act was motivated by concerns aboutairsports being used to shoot waterfowl at distances up to 175 yards (160 meters). In response to this new law, Father John Fenton opened up his shop and began selling airguns under the name “Father John’s Airgun Store”. A year later, he changed the store name to “Clinton Gun Shop” and continued doing so until 1949 when he closed his store due to economic conditions. Since then, many different people have owned and operated the Clinton gunshop including Donny Heisler who began ownership in 1978. Many different types of firearms have been sold at Clinton GunShop including pistols, shotguns, rifles, handguns and even machineguns! The Clinton gunshop has always been a center for shooters in town with many meetups and shoots taking place there each year!
