Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 9,898 at the 2010 census. The Cedar Rapids metropolitan area has a population of over 100,000 people. Cedar Rapids is the center of the Cedar Rapids-Wichita Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city was founded by John Sibley and others in 1855 as a trading post on the Red River near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas. In 1887 it became the capital of Iowa and hosted the state legislature until Des Moines replaced it in 1911. In 1924–25 Cedar Rapids built its first skyscraper – The General Electric Building – becoming one of America's largest cities with tall buildings until New York City surpassed it in 2008. In 1909 Cedar Rapids built its first airport – Republic Airport – which served as an early test bed for air travel within Iowa and later became both the state's primary airport and home to Midwestern Airlines before being sold to IAA in 1958. In 1961 IAA leased land at Buffalo Soldier Air Reserve Base (later known as Greenwood Army Air Field) to build false runways so that Charles Lindbergh could practice low-level flying during his aborted cross-country flight from New York to Chicago; this event is generally considered to be when Aeronautical Research Laboratory (ARL), later Hughes Aircraft Company embryo started operations at Wright-Patterson AFB north of Dayton Ohio Cedar Rapids has been determined "America's Capital for Green Technology" by GreenTechNation magazine three times since 2007 In recent years much focus has been placed on creativity precinct located adjacent riverfront called "Quarterdeck". Rifle stocks have a long and varied history, dating back to the early days of firearms. Some of the first rifles were designed for hunting game, and were made from materials such as animal hide, sinew, and hair. The rifle was also used for war purposes during the Revolutionary War. In 1836, Major John Fenton developed the concept of a telescopic sight for rifles. Thissight allowed shooters to aim their weapons at far away targets with ease. Rifle stocks continued to be developed throughout the 1800s and into the 1900s. Many different types of stocks were used in various firearm designs during this time period. In 1906, Colonel Robert Erskine patented a new type of stock that permitted shooters to fire more rounds per minute without having to reload frequently. These developments led to increased production rates for firearms and helped increase America’s military capability. After World War II, rifle stocks became less common in favor of carbines and shotguns due to advances in technology. However, some exceptions still continue to be made today for specific firearm designs or applications such as sniper rifles or target shooting competitions.

Cedar Rapids, Iowa was founded on December 4, 1847 by a group of men who were looking for a place to build a new town. The first settlers arrived in what is now Cedar Rapids and established the city's first school. The town grew quickly and by 1860 it had a population of over 500 people. The growth of the city led to the development of many civic institutions, such as the Cedar Rapids Herald and Museum, and the Cedar Rapids branch of the United States Bank. In 1916, Cedar Rapids became one of the thirty-six towns in Iowa authorized to issue its own currency - the first in that state. The city also built its first hospital in 1917. In recent years, Cedar Rapids has undergone a number of changes - including becoming home to both an NBA team (the Timberwolves) and an NHL team (the Blackhawks). However, this hasn't stopped the city from continuing to develop its economy which includes several large employers such as Archer Daniels Midland Company, Intel Corporation and Abbott Laboratories. In addition to its economic significance, Cedar Rapids has been host to many cultural events throughout its history, including two NCAA Final Fairs (as well as various other international events), two World Wars II Conferences and numerous music festivals.
