Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a city in the Midwestern United States. The population was 749 at the 2010 census, down from 811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids-Rapid City, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The area that became Cedar Rapids was first settled by people who arrived via boat in 1847. The town was founded on November 12, 1854 by John Wirth and James Fenton as a stop on their Indianola Expedition. Bloomington eventually became the town's primary commercial center while Cedar Rapids developed as a bedroom community for Bloomington and other nearby towns. In 1929, Cedar Rapids amalgamated with neighboring cities of Newton and Menomonie to form the new city of Des Moines. However, during World War II (1939-1945), Cedar Rapids served as an Army airfield providing critical facilities for pilots flying training missions over Iowa and Illinois. As a result of its military importance, Cedar Rapids experienced rapid growth after its annexation by Des Moines. By 1960, it had become one of America's fastest-growing cities with nearly 100% growth in residents over 20 years. As more people moved into downtown areas such as Canal Street or east side neighborhoods such as Weiser and Main Street since Des Moines began annexing rural communities in north central Iowa during the late 1970s and early 1980s, downtown vegetation decreased along with some older building stock due to demolition/redevelopment pressures sometimes exerted by adjacent development interests rather than architectural or historical reasons.(Dodge) In recent years there has been an effort underway to reverse these forces through rezoning plans that would allow increased use of historic buildings within designated areas - this may provide hope for further preservation efforts in what has been seen as one of America’s most endangered historic districts.(Kelsey) Overall however Downtown Cedar Rapids continues to experience significant decline no matter how counterintuitive it may seem given present trends; nonetheless much work remains to be done before this district can be considered “crisp” again.(Anderson) Cedar rapids history can be traced back to 1847 when settlers first arrived on boats looking for land west of US 60 near where Spirit Lake now stands(Fenton). On November 12th 1854 they named their new settlement "Cedar Rapids." A few years later they built a post office which opened on February 14th 1860(Wirth). By 1870 there were 3 stores & 1 hotel & 11 homes(Fenton). At this time many farmers started moving into town because they found good land south of where Iowas river crossed into Canada wagon road today called 2nd St NW&NW corner RR(&MILWAUKEE RD). This area lay undeveloped until 1906 when dentist Dr Wm J Hennepin bought 5 acres eastof Center Rd & began building his dental practice which still operates today on Broadway Ave NW between First & Second Streets(*Hennepin Dental Practice*)(Edwards) In 1907 two brothers Named Charles & Harry Nemeth purchased 10 acres just northwestof Center Road from Dr Hennepin giving them control over what would become known as Nemeth Park(*Nemeth Park[1]).
