In 1923 they purchased an old sawmill on the banks of the river for use as their new corporate headquarters; this mill still stands across from present day First National Bank Building (now part of United Artists Center). During World War II, local farmers produced much needed food for troops stationed overseas; many local residents also took jobs manufacturing munitions or working at military installations around the country. After hostilities ended in 1945, many people returned to their homes while others began redevelopment projects such as bringing retailing back to town center during this time period called "The Golden Age." They named their new settlement after a local cedar tree which they saw growing on a farm near present-day Burlington, Vermont. The town was officially founded on November 15, 1837 by Nathaniel Halsey and Ahearn Pritchard. It grew rapidly due to its location at the confluence of the mighty Vermilion and Iowa Rivers, as well as its various industries including lumbering and manufacturing. In 1846, Cedar Rapids became an official city when it amalgamated with neighboring West Point to form the City of Des Moines. During World War II, Cedar Rapids played an important role in providing military supplies to Allied forces fighting in Europe. One of its primary supply networks ran through truck terminals located on I-10 north of downtown where goods could be unloaded and brought into battle directly onto ships docked at nearby ports. Additionally, Cedar Rapids produced large quantities of goods for use by American troops stationed overseas such as ammunition, clothing and other items essential for victory over Nazi Germany or Japan.
