Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa and the seat of Cedar Rapids County. The population was 47,596 at the 2010 census, making it the 14th-largest city in Iowa. It is located on the east bank of the Des Moines River and is one of three cities in Iowa that are both mentioned in the same sentence as Chicago, Illinois. Cedar Rapids grew up around manufacturing and agriculture, but since 2000 it has become an increasing center for technology companies and research institutions. The first Europeans to visit what is now Cedar Rapids were French traders who explored this area in 1692. A British trading post was established here by Captain John Smith in 1763, but this location was abandoned due to lack of water supply. In 1816 a group of Mormons from Utah reached this area on their way to establish a town called Nauvoo south of present day Cedar Rapids. The first settler in what would become Cedar Rapids was Isaac Mayhew who arrived in 1827 with his family from Boston. He organized a sawmill and grist mill on current site of First National Bank building which he named after himself, Mayhew's family ran this business until 1830 when they moved westward into what would become Waterloo Township where they founded Mayhew's Mill & Trading Post #2 (now known as First National Bank). In 1835 Mayhew sold his operation to Nathan Dunham who continued it until 1860 when it became part of Burlington Railroad property; this made it possible for farmers to buy land surrounding the mill for farming purposes rather than having to build them themselves. This development allowed Forney chemical company founder John Doerffer (1822-1912) to settle here permanently in 1867 and start processing chemicals for other businesses such as Dodge Brothers Brewery (1868-1920). In 1907 Cedar Rapids acquired its own public library which opened its doors on September 6th under management of Mrs Clara Pemberton (1865-1943). At that time there were just 10 buildings within downtown boundaries which included 5 schools and 3 churches/synagogues; today CBD has over 100 buildings with over 25 million square feet (21 acres) Of retail space including more than 20 anchors including Sears Home Stores (1970s), JCPenney Co., Target, Macy’s Inc., Kmart Inc., Sam’s Club (1980s), Sears Roebuck & Co., JBL Audio/Video products store(1990s), Applebee's Grill & Bar(2000s), etc.). With continual growth came increased roadway width necessitating construction starting with CBD’s first major project – Main Streetwidewalk – completed during 1988 followed by additional arterial streets like Depot Road(1992), 21st Ave.(1998), US 60(1999)), Capitol Way(2001) and many more recent projects such as I-290 Extension Project(2005)). Today CBD offers excellent access to transportation options such as I-235 South ($10 per hour parking permit required) or Interstate 380 North ($5 per hour lot permits available online or at various locations). Additionally numerous restaurants have cropped up along these corridors creating an exciting food scene unique unto itself not found anywhere else within IA!
