In 1945–46 when industrial production collapsed followingWorld War II,[1] Cedar Rapids experienced one of the largest waves of population movement in United States history with many people moving into suburban areas.[2] During the 1990s–2000s demographic transition,[3] Cedar Rapids experienced rapid growth as an inland city becoming increasingly competitive with Iowa City for job opportunities and services available within walking distance of downtown. In recent years there has been a focus on development around riverfront properties overlooking downtown; this has led to increased traffic congestion around downtown but also helped improve pedestrian safety through installation of new streetlights and enforcement of rules against turning down sidewalks near streams or rivers.[4][5]
