Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a city of over 150,000 people that has seen an increase in its conversion rate to high capacity energy storage. In 2013, Cedar Rapids became the first city in Iowa to be awarded a $5 million grant from the state government for the installation of high capacity solar and wind power systems. The grant will help reduce our reliance on fossil fuels and support continued growth in renewable energy. Through our work with local businesses, we continue to learn about how best to store energy for use when conditions are optimal. We have installed two large solar arrays and three wind turbines in order to provide us with clean energy that can last throughout the year. Our goal is always to ensure that we can use our new resources sustainably while also providing jobs and economic opportunity for residents. Through this work, we are helping others see just how feasible it is for them too install high capacity conversions as well. Cedar Rapids became the largest city in Iowa in 1854 when it was detached from the larger city of Des Moines. The first cotton gin in Cedar Rapids was built by John Smeaton in 1857. In 1865, a new cotton gin was built by J. P. Patterson and this allowed for greater cotton production which led to increased business opportunities for Cedar Rapids. The population of Cedar Rapids grew rapidly from around 9,000 people in 1860 to over 25,000 people by 1880. As the economy changed and more manufacturing companies moved into the area, jobs became scarce and businesses closed their doors, leading to a decline in population and economic activity until the early 20th century. In 1916, Cedar Rapids annexed the adjacent city of Council Bluffs which had been founded as an agricultural town about 60 miles northwest of Des Moines. This annexation made Cedar Rapids both an official city and added 1 million residents to its population which is still above its original size today. In 1927, Cedar Rapids merged with neighboring City of Dubuque which had also grown rapidly during that decade due to new industry growth such as Ford Motors plants located there. This merger made Dubuque one of Iowa's larger cities with over 100,000 residents at its peak and helped spur development within the city once again while keeping much of what made downtown unique – such as its antique shops – alive

The town was renamed Cedar Rapids in 1872 after its original location on the Cedar River. In 1955, it became an incorporated city. As of 2009, it had a population of 43,641. The first settlers to Iowa were French Canadians who arrived in 1785. They established a fur trading post at what is now Cedar Rapids. The next year, they founded Fort Wayne on the Chicago River near present-day Des Moines. After years of skirmishes with Native Americans, these pioneers built four mountain forts along the river's banks to protect their interests and supply themselves and their families with food and supplies. In 1847, General Ulysses S. Grant ordered Major Jesse Jameson to lead an uprising against Mexico in Texas which led to much bloodshed andpanic uprisings throughout America that year—the final straw that caused Grant to order Illinois congressman Stephen Alder (whose father alsoorthopedized) to send federal troops into Illinois under General Don Carlos Ramirez y Gómez to quell this insurrectionary movement called "The Mexican Revolution." On July 12th of that year, General Ramirez y Gómez marched his troops into central Iowa from Decatur County towards Burlington County when he discovered what he thought were two thousand Indians about two miles west of where he was marching when he instead found twenty-one mounted men led by Captain John Mason who boarded his force without warning and took over control without any shots fired! This event has been referred to as "The Battle of White Sands" since there are no physical remnants remaining today of either side's military operations; all that remains are community memories and stories! Iowa's early days were difficult due largely to rugged terrain: only 10 miles wide at its widest point but running for more than 500 miles deep within rolling hills covered with vast stands of trees providing cover from Indian attack or being trapped between hostile Sioux tribesmen east of the Mississippi River and Cherokee Nations west of it! On November 25th 1851 Immigrant Michael Ryan attempted unsuccessfullyto boat across Rock Island Strait from Canada landing near present day Council Bluffs Nebraska while en route back home from Omaha Missouri He sunk his boat with all aboard including himself killing all 5 members Of His Party Attempting ToCross And Was Sentenced To Death By WASHINGTON BACKER OF THE SILENT REVOLUTIONARY ARMY FOR HIS CRIME
Cedar Rapids was founded in 1847 by James Caldwell and David Smith. In 1893, the Cedar Rapids and Iowa Railway was built, connecting Cedar Rapids with Burlington, IA. The city grew rapidly during the early 20th century due to its location on the Hawkeye State's main rail corridor. The city saw an increase in population from 50,000 in 1907 to 150,000 by 1920. The Depression of 1929 led to a decline in population; however, the city continued to grow during World War II when it became one of the largest Midwestern cities to provide military supplies and housing for troops. During the 1960s and 1970s, Cedar Rapids experienced a growth spurt which again led to an increase in population until 1990 when it reached its current size.
