The history of Cedar Rapids goes back to 1829 when two brothers named John and James Caldwell purchased a tract of land north of present-day downtown from Pierre Burdette. In 1851, several settlers donated 640 acres (2 km2) east of town for use as a township; this township was later renamed after General George Armstrong Custer who lost his life in an Indian battle in 1876. On November 3, 1893, Cedar Rapids became an incorporated village with a population of 2,500 people under its first charter; however, by 1899 it had reached 5,000 residents due to waves of newcomers arriving during the late 1800s following new railroad construction throughout Iowa and Illinois. On July 1, 1907, Cedar RapidsBecame An Unincorporated Village again with a population OF 7 lodges under its second charter; however this charter was repealed on December 15th . In 1959 local resident Jack Welch founded Sam’s Club which remains headquartered in downtown today
