Iowa Wesleyan University was founded by Methodist pastor James Mclntyre in 1930 as Western Reserve Bible Institute; it became Iowa Wesleyan University School of Theology later that year. UI's Agricultural Experiment Station was established here by Wissinger in 1935; it becameIowa State University's Agricultural Research Service two years later. Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a small city in the US state of Iowa. The population was 33,601 at the 2000 census. Cedar Rapids is the county seat of Polk County. It is located on the banks of the Des Moines River, about 50 miles (80 km) south-southwest of Des Moines and 100 miles (160 km) east-northeast of Chicago. The first permanent settler in Cedar Rapids was Nathaniel Green in 1836. The town was named for General James K. Polk, who had been president during the Iranian revolution that year. In 1855, Cedar Rapids became an incorporated village under Ohio law and began to develop as a transportation and agricultural center due to its location on the then new Iowa State Road 4 from nearby Dubuque and Mount Pleasant. In 1907, when Iowa became a state, Cedar Rapids annexed part of Dubuque County as its second city; it was renamed unofficially Cedar City in 1912 because there were no other settlements within Dubuque County with similar name or pronunciation! By 1920, however, all subsequent changes had resulted in Cedar City becoming known as "Cedar Rapids." The first major building boom took place after World War II when many businesses opened up due to increased military spending by America's allies in Europe and Asia. The Great Depression put a stop to this growth but resumed following World War II until finally reaching its peak during the late 1960s through early 1970s when unemployment rates reached staggering levels!
