Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a city in and the county seat of Cedar Rapids County, Iowa, United States. The population was 29,752 at the 2010 census. Cedar Rapids is located on the Ogallala Aquifer near the confluence of the Des Moines and Missouri Rivers. The city was founded in 1847 by Danish immigrants as a small stop on the Underground Railroad. It became an important center for agricultural production during the late 19th century and early 20th century before becoming a major manufacturing town during World War II. Afterward, it lost its economic significance and experienced decline until recent decades when it has regained some of its former prominence as a center for education and business. The first people to settle in Cedar Rapids were Norwegian settlers who arrived around 1847. They built longhouses on land that had been donated by Jesse Lathrop. In 1848, Denmark made headlines when they settled an area south of present-day Cedar Rapids called Mound City to escape religious persecution in Norway. This settlement served as a model for later Scandinavian settlements in America which included Cedar Rapids. In 1849, James Guthrie started what would become one of Iowa's leading grain elevators with his Guthrie Elevator Company. By 1860, rice had replaced corn as the main crop in local diets and began to be grown here; this led to increased trade with China which created new opportunities for manufacturing products such as hardware or clothing there instead of shipping them back home. In 1862, John Averill opened what would become one of Iowa's largest cotton mills; this helped spur development here despite earlier challenges from nearby Decatur (now Dubuque) where cotton production peaked in 1902 at more than 110 million pounds per year During World War I (1914-18), Cedar Rapids played an important role due to its location on both sides of theConfederate River between Chicago and Omaha – making it one of several Midwest cities that received arms shipments from Europe while also providing employment for army personnel ashore along with other supplies needed by troops fighting on both sides including food, gasoline etc.. The city saw significant black impoverishment due to high rates of unemployment throughout much rural America following war although residents did manage some modest improvements over time such as better public schools In 1925–27 Mayor Harry Franklin instituted zoning laws that limited building heights within certain limits designed primarily to promote agriculture rather than housing In 1932–35 City Council passed ordinances creating restrictions on nightlife that remain largely unchanged today During this period large numbers of German Americans moved into downtown areas vacated by ethnic Germans expelled during World War I Some argue that these arrivals may have stimulated industrialization/economic growth along Wacker Drive Central Avenue which straddles downtown/southwest edge now known as “German Village” . Others note there were no industries specifically associated with Germans either then or since . Nevertheless many businesses clustered around KFC Park east side close to railroad tracks dating back 100 years

Today, Cedar Rapids enjoys strong cultural ties with surrounding rural communities and is home to several major cultural attractions including the State Fairgrounds which are used for events such as rodeo exhibitions and energy presentations; two large shopping malls; multiple professional sports teams; several high-rise buildings; and numerous small businesses dotting every inch of downtown square footage.

However, thanks to donations from local citizens, reconstruction began immediately and soon enough Downtown Cedar rapids had come back to life! Since then, Downtown Cedar rapids has been home to many major events including the Iowa State Fairgrounds; the Iowa Championship Wrestling Tournament; and finally this past year’s Iowa City Folk Music Festival!
