Cedar Rapids was founded in 1855 and became an incorporated town in 1875. It experienced heavy flood damage during the 1995–1996 Iowa floods and has since made strides to rebuilt its infrastructure. The history of Cedar Rapids dates back to 1855 when it was founded as a small farming village by Reuben Heringer and others on the eastern bank of the Des Moines River. The community grew rapidly due to its location downstream from what would become downtown Cedar Rapids, whose construction began in 1865 and finished just two years later. At first, most residents were farmers who built their homes near their crops or barns; however, soon enough businesses began to open up in downtown which led to more people moving into town. By 1880, Cedar Rapids had Become an Urban Center with over 1,000 residents and boasted a variety of commercial establishments including banks, hotels, stores and other businesses that supplied goods for local farmers and consumers alike. During World War II (1939-1945), Cedar Rapids played a critical role as one of America's major industrial centers due to its production of munitions and other military supplies used by both Axis forces and Allied forces fighting against Nazi Germany. This saw growth in nightlife along with nightclubs such as Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show which attracted many servicemen who were stationed nearby while they awaited deployment overseas. The war also helped spur development within downtown including new housing projects such as Regency Tower (now known as Allstate Arena) which opened in 1947 followed by Central Park Blocks (now known as Wells Fargo Place). In addition to these changes Downtown also experienced significant renovation beginning with the construction of City Hall which Opened on October 26th 1948 which replaced earlier structures dating back to 1892 when Cedar Rapids was organized as a township under the state’s newly adopted Constitutionality Act passed by Governor George Vilsack following passage of Iowans Statehood referendum that year! In recent years redevelopment activity has recommenced throughout much of Downtown with re-development efforts focusing on areas surrounding Interstate 35W such as Grand Avenue SW & Elmwood Avenue SW where several high-end hotel developments have recently been completed including Onward Inn Hotel & Conference Center adjacent To Quicken Loans Arena And Renaissance Centre located just east Of I-35W exit 5A off US 61 South

The present-day downtown was built on the remains of an earlier city. The first settlers in what is now Cedar Rapids were religious refugees from Indiana who fled the state's anti-slavery laws. They founded a community called "New Jerusalem" on November 1, 1854, near what is now Webster Groves Elementary School. New Jerusalem grew slowly until 1871 when it amalgamated with other towns in the area to form Cedar Rapids. The new city center was designed by John Taylor and built over a period of several years using local resources and labor including slaves taken from nearby farms for construction work onwhat would become downtown Cedar Rapids. The original four blocks of downtown are still business district today with most of the office buildings dating back to this time including the old State Capitol building which housed both public and private courts during its time as official seat of government before being moved to Morningside Heights in 1933. Downtown Cedar Rapids continued to grow rapidly after World War II when many businesses moved into newly developed neighborhoods such as Midtown and West Side which are still home to some of today's most popular restaurants and nightlife destinations like Live Oak Casino and Hilton Garden Inn & Suites Downtown Cedar Rapids
Cedar Rapids was founded on December 12, 1838 by the government of Iowa Territory. The town was named for the cedar trees that grew near the site. Cedar Rapids grew quickly, and in 1840 it became a city. In 1847, Cedar Rapids became the capital of Des Moines County. The city was renamed Des Moines in 1871 after Queen Victoria's visit to Iowa.
