Cedar Rapids, Iowa is a city in the US state of Iowa. The population was estimated to be 753,545 at the 2010 census, making it the second most populous city in Iowa after Des Moines. Cedar Rapids is located on the Missouri River and is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in what is now Cedar Rapids was Jacob Wirthle in 1854. At that time, Cedar Rapids consisted of only a few homes and some families working as farmers. The first buildings were erected on State Street near present-day Butterfield Elementary School. In 1868, an act of Congress authorized a town site on the east side of the river for Cedar Rapids. The plat included all present-day downtown areas as well as parts of northwest Iowa City and southeastern Waterloo County. On December 3, 1870, President Ulysses S Grant dedicated the new courthouse at Third and Delaware streets – one of several significant buildings built during his term as president. Construction began on the original water tower which became known locally as "the Lady". Work was completed in November 1872; however due to flooding that year, it was temporary operations only until February 1st when it reopened with full power under new management courtesy of private donations from citizens who had seen its potential usefulness for flood control purposes alone rather than just facility enhancement (which also funded other aspects of local infrastructure such as public schools). In 1907, two years after Cedar Rapids received its charter from the government, construction began on what would become known as "The Brick House" – still standing today at 301 E Seventh St., visible from Interstate 35E just south of downtown (see map below). It served not only as a commercial property sales office but also acted both as home to Mayor Ladd’s Mansion (now called Parkside Manor) while he resided in Washington D C and also housed Town Meeting Rooms until they moved into their current location within City Hall Park in 1916. When World War I began hostilities erupted across Europe starting September 1914 there was little America could do except watch helplessly from abroad; nevertheless by October 1917 much progress had been made thanks to Federal Emergency Relief Program monies which went directly into building projects throughout rural America including many small towns like Cedar Rapids that were hit particularly hard by war-time rationing shortages caused by European bans on certain goods imported into North America due to sanitary concerns about disease vectors such As earlyAs 1915 many small towns along our mighty Missouri River were without running water or electricity so various departments including Streets and Alleys Department built ditches dug deep enough with heavy machinery clear out all obstacles found therein then filled up with high explosive charges creating large explosions isolating those communities for weeks or even months preventing any more damage done thereby enabling these communities back up again quickly & efficiently

The first settlers were farmers and their families who built homes along the banks of the river where they would irrigate their crops. In 1881, when Des Moines–West Des Moines Railroad Company merged with other railroad companies, Cedar Rapids became one of its own and started to grow rapidly as a manufacturing center for agricultural products such as flour, potatoes, cottonseed oil and hay. Today, Cedar Rapids remains an important economic center with major employers including Iowan State University (ISU), Ameritech Inc., Edwards Rubbermaids Co., Krueger's Pharmacy & Drugs, PepsiCo USA Midwest Region Headquarters and more than 150 small businesses across several sectors including health care/medical device industry; information technology; automotive parts manufacturing; retail trade; agriculture; natural resources/mineral resources;; etc. The City also hosts numerous cultural events each year that include art exhibitions, music festivals and carnivals throughout the summer months.
Cedar Rapids was founded in 1854 by John C. Cedar and his brothers, David and Eli Cedar. The area that is now Cedar Rapids was first populated by Native American Sioux people who were ancestors of the Iowa Sioux. In 1859, the Cedar Rapids and Waterloo Railroad was completed, making it possible for settlers to move into the area. The city was named after Captain James W. Cedar of the Ulysses S. Grant Expedition who led a group of soldiers through central Iowa in 1864 during the Black Hawk War.
