The town sprang up around this initial group of pioneers and quickly grew into a thriving community with its own school system, jail, store, cotton gin (the first located in America), doctor, Masonic lodge and several churches including one built byGeneral Harrison Gray Otis during his presidency of Iowa (1847-48).
