Cedar Falls is a small town in central Iowa, United States. The population was 3,011 at the 2010 census. Cedar Falls is the county seat of Cedar County. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines, IA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to Cedar Falls arrived in 1834 and founded a log cabin on the current site of downtown. In 1838, John Aiken purchased 160 acres (6 km2) of land adjacent to present-day Cedar Rapids for $4 per acre. Aiken built a mill on his new property and operated it until 1851 when he sold it to David Clinton for $30 per acre. The mill became known as Clinton's Mills and was used for woolen manufacturing until 1918 when it closed down due to World War I economic shortages. In 1931, local citizens voted to rename the town Cedar Falls after James Schieffelin who had donated money for its erection. At that time, only 2% of Iowa's population lived in towns with more than 50000 residents; however, this number has grown over time as Cedar Rapids’ economy grew and other communities within easy driving distance were added or renamed such as Hiawatha Heights (2006), Burlington (2008), Elkader (2010), Ottumwa (2011), Winterset (2012) and Newtonville (2013). Cedar Falls is located at 41°27′N 97°03′W / 41.45°N 97.15°W / -0.85°W / -0.85; its elevation is 471 feet (150 m). According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Cedar Falls has a humid subtropical climate: "Cfa".
