Cedar Falls, Iowa is a small town located in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,846 at the 2010 census. It has been known as Cedar Rapids since 1855. The first settler in what is now Cedar Falls was James Cushing and his family who arrived in 1838 from Kentucky. They founded a log cabin on the banks of the Des Moines River. In 1840, they moved to their present location and started building a fortification to protect their new settlement from Indian attacks. This fort was called Fort Cushman and it served as the nucleus of what is now Cedar Rapids. In 1855, John Ayer established the town of Cedar Falls on land that he had purchased from the Sachem Potawatomi Indians. He named his town after his father-in-law, General Philip Kearny. The first store in downtown Cedar Rapids opened in July of that year by Jno Hagerty and His Brothers with assistance from Hiram Sells and Wm Haggerty Sr.. The first school was built near Main Street between First and Second Streets in 1865 by Mr. Ladd & Co.. The first post office opened in November of 1865 by Elisha Hancock with help from Geo Milford and others.. In 1870, Mrs. Fancher donated land for a public square which became known as Central Square today.. During World War II, many businesses were located within walking distance of Central Square includingthe Dakota Gas Company (now part of Enbridge), Girdersheet Machine Works (now Bechtel), Curtiss Aircraft Corporation (later McDonnell Douglas) plants producing B-24 Liberators bombers for American forces fighting against Japan during World War II; also Schumacher’s grocery store on First Street; Pfeffer’s restaurant across the street; Stanley Plumbing & Heating Company on Third Street; Radio Shack at Fourth Street NE; several movie theaters including Regal Cinemas®, Elmira Junior High School Playhouse™ operated out of Central Square during this time period; finally Thiele’s Hardware Store closed its doors following national prohibition effective December 5th 1924 replaced by Hawkeye Trailer Park development just east of central square In 1951 when Iowa became an independent state residents voted to change their name back to Cedar Falls after being lobbied by local farmers who felt that it represented more accurately thanIowa City when Iowan citizens Intentonized changing their name back to Cedar Rapids because they thought it would be more reflective of their community’s history So much so that Iowan Senators Peter Peterson and Phil Gramm tried unsuccessfully to have both names changed simultaneously but ultimately failed In January 2006 Mayor Jerry Bowman announced plans to rename Center Square fronting First Street “John Ayer Way” in honorofCedarFalls pioneer John Ayer Jr., one half brotherof Mayor Jerry Bowman And according to city ordinance then amended effective January 1st 2007 all business owners must display a blue plaque with either Jno Hagerty or Jay Ayer's name prominent inside ()
